Toll by Toll

Midnight tolls on my soul

The darkness all around

The black of the night layers my skin, like ink in a well

Wrapping me in the words that have not yet been written

It is up to me to write the story of darkness

To fathom the black

To make sense of it all

The more I write, the more ink is taken away

Written into the night, the ink fades off my skin

Signaling the end of the dark and the coming of the day

The dawn wipes away my work

Some of it hides in the long shadows of the new day

Holding on to life, but by noon it is gone

The evening shadows bring back the darkness

It flows into the well, once more, layering my skin

Toll by toll, the darkness gains power and strength

Midnight comes and I am drowned in it again
